E-Books Effect On The Environment

E-books have come a long way yet people still have not fully implemented them. There are a few reasons why it is like that. First things first, having traditional books are much more satisfying than having e-books. This is because a lot of people still find it more effective to jot down notes on the respective pages of their books, specifically textbooks. Students love to jot down notes and have a hard time parting with their books, thus they keep them around. However, with technology nowadays, we can also jot down notes on the pages of our e-books.

Other than that, people prefer physical books because it is more precious and valuable than e-books. However, when you think about it, you would want to keep something that is precious to you for a long time right? Well, physical books can decay and damage very easily so why would you waste your own time trying to preserve something that would be hard to preserve? It would take a lot of effort to preserve a book to almost perfect quality. On the other hand, an e-book would not need preserving as long as your device is fine. That aside, with cloud technology nowadays, it would not matter if your device were damaged or not because your data, including your e-books, would be safely stored in the cloud.

Although there are a lot of people who prefer physical books to e-books, there are a lot of benefits of e-books that may change their mind. E-books don’t only benefit the environment but they benefit us in many different ways. One of the ways it benefits us, whether as a reader or a publisher, is that we get to save money. We would not have to spend on buying new books and we would not have to spend on producing books since they are published digitally. Because of that as well, stories or educational materials can be released to readers sooner than waiting for a physical book to finish producing.

With that being said, here are other benefits and further explanations of e-books:

Reduce Deforestation

E-books are made by shredding up trees and to shred them up, people have to cut them down in masses. Especially when someone is about to print out over a hundred copies or a book of any kind. Not to mention the expensive costs of printing a book. With e-books, you would not need to worry about production costs and in turn, e-books would be cheaper compared to physical books. It benefits both the publisher and the reader. Anyway, when we start reducing the use of physical books, henceforth we could reduce deforestation and save the Earth. Deforestation causes landslides, increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and might cause global warming as well so it’s so much better to just fully switch to e-books bit by bit.

Reduce Pollution

Following the previous paragraph, switching to e-books or implementing the use of them in schools or universities will also reduce pollution. Thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of books get trashed every year. Be it due to not being in use anymore or simply an author having too many copies and did not sell out, leaving them with copies of the same book. Thus, either way, those books will get thrown away. Some are recycled but a lot still gets disposed of quite irresponsibly. That is just a waste of money and trees honestly. Those trees would’ve been our oxygen but they were wasted when they were turned into books. Here’s something you may not know, producing a lot of books after deforesting produces a huge carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is basically the amount of greenhouse gases released into the environment. These greenhouse gases will then cause a lot of harm to our Earth. Not only does physical books harm our planet by being disposed of, but they also harm it by being produced. Hence, that is why we need to switch to e-books so that we can reduce our carbon footprint significantly.

Reduce Use Of Space

Any books we buy or those that are produced will, of course, take up space. Sometimes, even space costs money. For instance, when books are published, they will be on sale for a while in bookstores. Owners of those bookstores have to pay up for the costs of getting the book stocked as well as the rent for the bookstores. Other than that, there are also spaces like libraries that cost a lot of money just to store books. However, if we switch to e-books and implement them everywhere, we can surely make better use of those spaces. Moreover, e-books can be stored on your devices and nowadays, as mentioned before, we can safely store our data as well as the e-books with cloud technology.

Reduce Wear And Tear

One of the biggest problems with keeping physical books is that they get damaged very easily. No matter what kind of paper they are made of, they will eventually start damaging naturally. Pages turn yellow, printed words fade and who knows, you might even spill something on them along the way, causing more damage. Even factors as simple as the temperature or the weather affect the quality of the book. Thus, getting e-books would be so much better in terms of saving your money, saving your time as well as your effort to try and preserve physical books. Since e-books are stored via any device you have, there would not be much maintenance needed anyway. The wear and tear of physical books can’t really be measured in a specific time but when the time comes, it will definitely be trashed so what is the point of getting a physical book anyway?

Thus, you can see that e-books are very beneficial, both to us and the environment. They produce less waste, they reduce our carbon footprint, and thanks to modern technology, they are stored safer and we’re able to edit them however we want.
